Its springtime! Allergy season is approaching, so if you anticipate that your child will need allergy medicine for relief of symptoms during the school day, please bring in the allergy medicine in the original packaging, and sign an authorization form. The medicine will be kept in the nurse’s office. As always, students should never carry medicine with them.
Just a reminder: If your child has vomited or had a fever of 100 degrees or higher, you should keep the child at home for 24 hours from the last time he or she vomited, or 24 hours from when the temperature returns to normal. Please remind your child that if he or she feels ill at school, the child should NOT call home from the classroom or cell phone; the child must come to the nurse’s office for assessment. I will call home if the student has a fever of 100 degrees or higher, has a “nasty” looking throat, has vomited, or just plain looks sick! Otherwise, I try to encourage the students to stay in school to avoid missing important classroom instruction.
Immunization Update: All students MUST have the following immunizations or a signed waiver for state and county compliance:
- 5 DTaP (diphtheria, tetanus, acellular pertussis)
- 4 Polio
- 2 MMR (measles, mumps, rubella)
- 3 Hepatitis B
- 1-2 doses of varicella, depending on the child’s age, or history of chicken pox
- Boosters and additional immunizations strongly recommended for 7th grade students: DTaP, 2nd varicella (chicken pox), meningococcal (meningitis), 3 series Gardasil (girls only—HPV virus).
These immunizations protect against very serious diseases. In this age of global travel, we are exposed to many of these diseases, and other countries do not immunize as carefully. I am working my way through the students’ immunization records to make sure everyone is up to date, so if your child has received any recent immunizations, please bring in his or her record so that I can update the record.
As the weather gets warmer, children are riding bikes, skateboarding, and rollerblading more. Make sure that your child wears a properly fitting helmet at all times, even if he or she is just riding around on the patio or driveway—the asphalt is just as hard if they fall!
Spinal screenings to check for common spinal abnormalities (scoliosis) will begin on March 31, and continue throughout April. All 7th grade girls and 8th grade boys will be screened individually to ensure privacy. A letter/permission slip was sent home with these students with screening information a few weeks back; if you need another one, please have your child get one from the nurse’s office.
